Floors and walls the stand analysis
1. Band: Floors And Walls
Song: The Stand
Director: Adam Powell
2905125249555
This video begins with shots of the band’s instruments, not being played, with no music behind. This builds tension, you find yourself asking what will happen next. The next shot shows the band beginning to play – this is mostly a performance-based video, with some narrative also. The performance based side of the video shows all band members, whereas the narrative aspects show only the lead singer.
The location used for the performance-based shots in this music video is a multi-story car park. This might have been chosen as the location because of the band’s genre of music, which they describe as being “Alternative/Drum & Bass/Concrete”.
-38100657225There is a relationship between the lyrics and the visuals in this video. For example, “As I walk in the bar of a restaurant...” shows a shot of the singer walking, then shots of him sitting in somewhere that looks like a pub or bar. Also, later on in the song, when he sings “And I wake up wondering where I am and my face feels really bruised...” the camera switches to a shot of the lead singer against a plain background using a blue/purple filter – possibly a reference to the bruising he would have. The camera shot is unsteady, as if you are swaying around. The shot also drifts in and out of focus; this creates the effect of the viewer feeling like they are the ones concussed in hospital.
Also, the camera shots change with the music. For example at the end of the song where he sings “La lala, la la la...” the shots cut on the beat except once. This is not overly done throughout the video so as to not to make it boring and repetitive and lose the viewer’s attention.
-2762254292602667000429260The shots switch between the band playing and the singer’s narrative. This keeps the video interesting, instead of having just the narrative or just the performance.
In this video, the only person you really see is the lead singer – the viewer doesn’t get to see many close-ups of the other band members. This directs focus upon him throughout the video in order to help gain audience attention.
3019425417830During the shots of the whole band playing, the lighting is quite bright on them, and the background is dark as it is night. This draws your attention straight to the band and the music, which is what really matters, instead of aesthetic aspects.
The lighting in the narrative-based shots is less white and in the shots of the lead singer sitting in a bar, his face appears to have a red tint, perhaps a reference to him getting beaten up in the song and ending up in hospital.
Lyrics:
As I walk in the bar of a restaraunt, there's always someone in there who stares.Even when I buy a drink and my parka's stout in my face I can still feel it there.'Cos it's cold, like the look of them, like quot;
what the fucks he doing in here?!quot;
So I sit myself down and I stare right back, 'cos I tell you what I ain't scared.So I sit there minding my own business 'cos I don't really like to be rude.Plus I just wanna sit and have a quiet drink but I see your face is all screwed.So up he jumps, not looking too pleased as he starts to walk over my way.With his hand in his pocket and a bottle in the other when I heard this geezer say;quot;
Oi! You, boy, I swear I know you, you got with my bird called Lynn!quot;
I said quot;
Howay mate, I ain't done nothin wrong!quot;
I just sit there and look at my Carling.As I walk down the alley, with my mate Barry, see a few geezers and I wonder what they carry.Hoods up, heads down, look at me. Circle made, they're a right little team.But I keep moving forward, I don't run away, 'cos these people don't get me afraid.'Cos I don't really care 'cos I've had a bad day.I ain't got no money anyway.So as we suspect they start to walk over and not lettin' us walk through.And we can't really see who's under the hoods so we don't really know what to do.So I look at Baryy and he ain't really fussed and he ain't gonna move out the way.So we're standing there staring face to face when we heard this geezer say:quot;
Oi! You mate, gimme your phone or I'll put you straight to the floor!quot;
I said my mate Barry ain't a real nice geezer, he'll put your head through that door!So what you lookin' at boy?You got somethin' in your eye?Your face is all screwed up mate, and your shoulder's all high!So what you lookin' at boy?You got somethin' in your eye?Your face is all screwed up mate, and your shoulder's all high!And I wake up wondering where I am and why my face feels really bruised.And I look to my left and guess who I see, it's Barry breathing out of a tube.And I don't understand and I don't remember how the fuck I ended up in here.Maybe them blokes were bigger than we thought or we might have had too much beer.So I start to reflect on what I might have done and why I've got these lumps on my head.But here comes a nurse lookin' nice in her dress to explain why I'm in this bed.But hold up, I think I recognise this girl as she keeps walking over my way.With a screwed up face, not looking too happy I heard this girl say.quot;
Oi! you, rat! Remember me? You broke my sister’s heart!quot;
So I didn't turn round, I just jumped out the bed 'cos I didn't want this girl to start!Hench!So what you lookin' at girl?You got somethin' in your eye?Your face is all screwed up mate, and your shoulder's all high!So what you lookin' at girl?You got somethin' in your eye?Your face is all screwed up mate, and your shoulder's all high!So what you lookin' at boy?You got somethin' in your eye?Your face is all screwed up mate, and your shoulder's all high!La la la, la la la la la la lala , la la la la la la la la.
